Therapy for Kids and Teens

When a young person feels overwhelmed by school or their own emotions, that pressure ripples into every corner of their daily life and affects the entire household.

Without the right support and emotional outlets, children and teens often experience:

  • School Avoidance and Burnout: The morning routine may become a daily battlefield of tears, arguments, or deep anxiety as they try to avoid what feels overwhelming or unsupportive.

  • The Cycle of Negative Self-Talk: Children too often internalize their academic or social struggles into a belief that they are "bad," "stupid," or "lazy," severely eroding their self-esteem.

  • Strained Family Dynamics: When a child is operating in a state of constant emotional overload, it can lead to constant friction at home, leaving parents feeling entirely drained, helpless, and disconnected from their child.

At Balanced Mind Therapy, we offer a deeply unique perspective because our therapists are former school social workers. We don't just understand child development from a textbook. We know exactly what your child’s day looks like from the inside out.

We combine our deep clinical training in child and teen therapy with our extensive knowledge of the educational system to provide comprehensive, wrap-around support for your family:

  • Play Therapy and Creative Expression: For younger children, play is their first language. Through intentional play therapy, we get children to be active participants in therapy in a developmentally appropriate way that helps them express complex feelings, process stressful events, and practice new coping skills in a space that feels entirely safe and natural to them.

  • IEP and 504 Plan Advocacy and Support: Navigating the complex world of special education, accommodations, and school meetings can feel incredibly intimidating for parents. Because we have sat on the school side of the table for years, we can help you understand your rights, translate school data, and collaborate effectively with your child's educational team to ensure they receive the exact 504 plan or IEP accommodations they need to thrive.

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) & DBT: For older kids and adolescents, we provide practical, age-appropriate tools to help them challenge anxious "all-or-nothing" thoughts and learn concrete distress tolerance skills to navigate intense peer and academic pressures without shutting down.

  • Mindfulness and Trauma-Informed Care: We teach realistic, gentle grounding and somatic tools to help children and teens recognize physical signs of stress, while ensuring our therapeutic pace respects their safety, builds their autonomy, and honors their unique emotional story.

You don't have to guess how to bridge the gap between your child's emotional wellness and their school success. Balanced Mind Therapy's intentional, collaborative, and supportive approach to child and teen therapy is designed to help them develop healthy self-esteem, coping skills, and a deeper understanding of themselves that supports success in school and beyond. Let’s work together to give your child the tools, confidence, and advocacy they deserve.
