Have you ever felt like past difficult experiences are still dictating how you live your life today, even if they happened years ago? That's where we come in.

Maybe you notice that your body suddenly goes into high alert in response to a specific sound, sight, person, or thought. Your heart races, your muscles tense, or you feel a wave of panic. On the other hand, you might experience the opposite: feeling completely numb, disconnected from your body, or like you’re watching your life happen from a distance. You might find yourself avoiding certain places, people, or memories because they feel too overwhelming.

Trauma doesn’t just live in our thoughts, it shows up in our nervous system and often in ways we don't fully understand. If you find yourself struggling to trust others, feeling constantly on guard, or carrying a heavy, quiet belief that you are somehow fundamentally unsafe or broken, your body is likely still trying to protect you from an old hurt. Whether you decide to label it trauma or not, you don't have to keep carrying this by yourself. Trauma therapy can help.

When an overwhelming event or a series of stressful experiences remains unresolved, it changes how you see yourself and how you navigate the world. It’s like living with an invisible weight that makes everyday tasks feel exhausting, even if that pain or danger feels far away.

Unprocessed trauma often shows up in daily life through:

  • The Emotional Rollercoaster: You may shift rapidly between intense irritability, deep sadness, or sudden waves of anxiety without always knowing why.

  • Disrupted Rest and Health: Struggles with chronic insomnia, vivid nightmares, or unexplained physical symptoms like stomach pain, headaches, and tension that doctors can't quite pinpoint are unfortunately common for people who have experienced trauma.

  • Relational Barriers: It can be incredibly difficult to feel secure in your relationships and you may find yourself oscillating between wanting closeness and pushing people away to keep yourself safe.

At Balanced Mind Chicago, we meet you exactly where you are. We don't expect you to show up to therapy with a positive attitude or boundless energy. Instead, we build a safe, non-judgmental space where you can take things one small step at a time.

We bring together powerful, evidence-based frameworks for trauma therapy to support your recovery in the way that feels authentic to you:

  • Trauma-Informed Care: This is the bedrock of our practice. We shift your perspective from "What is wrong with me?" to "How is what happened to me still affecting me?" You will have complete control over the pace of your therapy, creating an environment of safety, choice, and zero judgment.

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Trauma often leaves behind painful, distorted beliefs about ourselves and the world like "It was my fault" or "I can never trust anyone"). We work collaboratively to gently untangle these thoughts and rebuild a sense of self-worth.

  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): When memories or triggers cause intense emotions, DBT provides concrete, immediate distress tolerance tools to help you ground yourself and manage the distress without feeling consumed by it.

  • Mindfulness Practices: Because trauma often makes it uncomfortable to exist in your own skin, we use gentle, somatic (body-centered) mindfulness exercises. These simple tools help you slowly and safely reconnect with yourself, teaching your nervous system that it is finally safe to relax.

The past happened, but it doesn't have to be the blueprint for your future. Balanced Mind Therapy's intentional and supportive approach to trauma therapy can help you redefine yourself beyond what happened to you, build healthy relationships with yourself and the people you love the most, and show up fully in the way that you want to every day. Let’s work together to help you move from simply surviving to truly living.
